Burning eyes - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Burning eyes

Definition

Burning in the eyes is a common symptom of various diseases that affect the eye and the ocular adnexa; among the potentially responsible diseases, we note dry keratoconjunctivitis (dry eye syndrome), conjunctivitis, blepharitis and herpes simplex keratitis. Often, this annoying manifestation can occur along with itching, redness and eye irritation. Some people experience blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light when experiencing eye burns.

Seasonal or perennial allergies can cause inflammation (allergic conjunctivitis) that typically occurs with this symptom. In particular, burning eyes can develop as a reaction to airborne allergens (pollen, dust mites, mold or animal hair) or that come into contact with the conjunctival mucosa (local contact hypersensitivity). Even upper respiratory tract infections, such as the flu or a cold, can be accompanied by burning eyes.

One of the main causes of occasional eye burns is accidental exposure to environmental irritants (such as cigarette smoke, smog, sand or dust) and chemicals found in household cleaners, such as bleach or ammonia . A transient burning sensation can also be experienced when shampoo, soap or skin care cosmetics accidentally come into contact with the eyes. Other possible causes include the alteration of the tear film related to aging, the side effect of some drugs, the incorrect use of contact lenses (worn for too long and not changed regularly), the excessive use of computers or televisions and irritation caused by a foreign body.
