Definition

Tonsillitis is the acute or chronic inflammation of the palatine tonsils. Generally due to a viral infection, it often - but not necessarily - causes symptoms such as sore throat, fever and difficulty swallowing. Tonsillitis caused by bacteria requires taking antibiotics; unlike what happened in the past, the tonsils are surgically removed only in the presence of numerous relapses.
