World Production of the Walnut Tree

For alimentary use of the seeds, for the extraction of the husk, to obtain the precious wood, to produce herbal teas and healthy decoctions ... it seems that every reason is good to cultivate the splendid Juglas regia. The Italians know a lot about the thousand uses of this plant even if, to be honest, the Bel Paese is certainly not among the nations that make use of a "record" production.

To be honest, the walnut is cultivated mainly to obtain its precious seeds, since the wood is mostly a "parallel" source of income (due to the production decline of the plant, it is cut down and replaced). To get a more precise idea of the relative cultural importance it is therefore necessary to use as reference the annual production of the fruits themselves (nuts); overall, the worldwide production of nuts reaches 7000000 q. per year.

The United States reaches 50% and China 20% of world production, therefore the nations are undoubtedly more engaged in the cultivation of walnut. Only 4% is of Indian origin and, even less important, 14% is of multiple origin (the set of all the other countries that cultivate the nut).

Lastly, perhaps also for reasons of its surface, Italy covers only 3% of the world's cultivation, like Spain and Turkey.
