Laser pointers and vision hazards

If pointed directly at the eyes, laser pointers can cause burns on the ocular surface and serious retinal changes, such as to cause a true maculopathy.

The beam of rays can damage the retina by means of heat or photochemical mechanisms; the extent of the damage depends on the laser power and the duration of the exposure. Especially young people who use these tools improperly are considered at risk, considering them a toy.
