Apraxia - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Apraxia

Definition

Apraxia consists in the inability to perform intentional motor tasks, despite the will and the preserved physical capacity.

This symptom is the result of brain damage, generally affecting the parietal lobes or their connections. The patients affected, in fact, retain the memory of the already learned motor patterns, but are unable to perform coordinated and complex gestures to reach a certain end.

Apraxia can result from an embolic or thrombotic stroke, from an inflammatory state or from a degenerative process (eg Alzheimer's disease). Furthermore, it can result from localized brain lesions, especially of tumor, traumatic or vascular origin.
