SOLUMAG ® - Magnesium

SOLUMAG ® is a magnesium pidolate drug

THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Minerals - Magnesium

IndicationsAction mechanismStudies and clinical effectiveness Usage and dosage instructionsWarnings Pregnancy and lactationInteractionsContraindicationsUndesirable effects

Indications SOLUMAG ® - Magnesium

SOLUMAG ® is indicated in the prevention and treatment of magnesium deficiency states and in the treatment of symptoms of hyperexcitability of the nervous system.

SOLUMAG ® can also be used in the obstetric and gynecological field for the treatment of painful uterine contractions, eclampsia and hyperemesis gravidarum.

Mechanism of action SOLUMAG ® - Magnesium

Magnesium pidolate, the active ingredient of SOLUMAG ®, is an organic magnesium salt which, taken orally, is effectively absorbed at the intestinal level, reaching maximum plasma concentration in about 60 - 90 minutes.

Despite the bioavailability of this mineral is around 50% of the total dose taken, the presence of pidolic acid optimizes the transport of magnesium through cell membranes, reconstituting cellular pull and thus allowing this trace element to:

  • Assist the activity of numerous enzymes involved both in the catabolic processes necessary for energy production, and in the anabolic ones useful for the synthesis of important macromolecules such as nucleic acids and lipids;
  • Support the antioxidant activity of the cell, enhancing the activity of glutathione;
  • Modulate the cellular activation state, regulating both the intracellular signaling processes and the ion transport across the plasma membrane.

The lack of magnesium therefore, linked to different pathological conditions such as alcoholism, liver diseases, malabsorption syndromes, pancreatitis, serious nutritional deficiencies, has repercussions on numerous biological activities, seriously compromising both the capacity of nervous transmission and that of energy production.

Fortunately, oral supplementation has also proved useful in restoring the correct concentrations of this mineral, guaranteeing rapid remission of symptoms.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

1. THE MAGNESIUM REDUCES POST-PRANDIAL HYPERLIPIDEMIA

Br J Nutr. 2010 Feb; 103 (4): 469-72. Epub 2009 Nov 27.

Interesting work that shows how the intake of 500 mg magnesium can reduce post-prandial hyperlipidaemia in healthy subjects, probably reducing intestinal fat absorption. This is particularly important given the association between post-prandial hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis.

2. THE MAGNESIUM IN THE PREVENTION OF CORONARY DISEASES

J Am Acad Nurse Pract. 2009 Dec; 21 (12): 651-7.

Study that evaluates the presence of a possible association between high magnesium diets and reduced risk of developing coronary heart disease in adult men.

3. MAGNESIUM AND ALZHEIMER.

J Alzheimers Dis. 2010; 20 (4): 1091-106.

Experimental work demonstrating how supplementation with magnesium can reduce the secretion of amyloid beta protein, responsible for neurological damage in Alzheimer's disease. Therefore it is suggested a possible integration with magnesium in patients with or with familiarity.

Method of use and dosage

SOLUMAG ®

Granules for oral solution of 2250 mg of magnesium pidolate (equivalent to 184 mg of Mg ++).

The recommended dosage is one sachet twice a day, to be dissolved in a glass of water.

The intake of approximately 400 mg of Mg ++ allows the satisfaction of even the most demanding needs, significantly limiting the incidence of serious side effects.

The dose used may vary according to medical indications

Warnings SOLUMAG ® - Magnesium

The intake of SOLUMAG ® should be preceded by a medical examination to ascertain the absence of contextual pathologies incompatible with the administration of magnesium, and to define the optimal dosage to be integrated.

The patient must also be informed of the possibility that during the treatment there are disturbances of cardiovascular and respiratory activity, and of the immediate remedies to be used.

SOLUMAG ® contains sucrose, therefore its intake should be done with particular care in patients suffering from diabetes or from glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or fructose intolerance, and para hydroxy benzoates, excipients with allergizing power especially in atopic patients.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

The use of SOLUMAG ® during pregnancy or in the subsequent period of breastfeeding, to compensate for the increased need that is found in these phases, should only be done in case of real need and under strict medical supervision.

Interactions

The intake of magnesium together with tetracycline, digoxin, chlorpromazine could alter the pharmacokinetic characteristics of the aforementioned active principles, significantly reducing the expected therapeutic action.

On the contrary, magnesium could enhance the biological effect of some muscle relaxants generally used during anesthesia.

finally the assumption of some drugs such as thiazide diuretics, could induce an increase in the renal elimination of this mineral, thus determining an increase in its requirement.

Contraindications SOLUMAG ® - Magnesium

SOLUMAG ® is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or to the relative excipients, renal failure and simultaneous therapy with digitalis.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

Despite the fact that the intake of magnesium is generally well tolerated and devoid of particular side effects, it is important to remember that in some patients, above all hypersensitive, the appearance of digestive disorders, nausea, abdominal pain and allergic reactions, including dermatological ones, have been observed.

The long-lasting abuse or intake of SOLUMAG ® could lead to the appearance of hypermagnesemia with the related cardiovascular and respiratory complications.

Note

SOLUMAG ® is a prescription drug only.
