Nasal dryness - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Dry nose is a symptom that manifests itself especially with advancing age. The atrophy of the mucus-secreting structures, in fact, is the basis of a form of chronic rhinitis (called atrophic rhinitis) characterized by excessive patency of the nasal cavities; this condition is also accompanied by the formation of annoying crusts, a reduced sense of smell and bleeding (epistaxis).

Dry nose can also be caused by prolonged irritation of the nasal mucosa, local infections (eg vestibulitis and rhinitis) and systemic diseases, such as Sjögren's syndrome.

Nasal dryness can also be caused by the side effect of some drugs, in particular the abuse of nasal decongestants and antihistamines. Other possible causes are a very dry climate, excessive heating, air conditioning and contact with external irritants (dust, smoke, atmospheric dust or pollen).
