Definition

Decrease in the amount of hemoglobin (pigment localized in red blood cells that has the ability to carry oxygen) present in the blood; it can be caused by acute or chronic bleeding (haemorrhagic anemia), mineral deficiencies (iron deficiency anemia) or vitamins (pernicious anemia, megaloblastic anemia), poisoning, excessive destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anemia) and other conditions.
