Abdominoplasty: what is it?

The abdominoplasty is an intervention indicated in the case in which the abdomen is heavy with accumulations of fatty tissue, associated with an excess of skin and a relaxation of the muscular wall . These situations can be found, for example, in women who have had more pregnancies or in subjects suffering from obesity who have had restrictive diets or surgical procedures to combat it.

How the intervention takes place

During the planning of the intervention, the surgeon carefully examines the characteristics of the patient's abdomen, assessing its elasticity, the presence of stretch marks, the type of skin and the presence of symmetrical or asymmetrical fat deposits. This preliminary information makes it possible to determine whether surgical removal of localized adiposity and abdominal skin excess should be combined with liposuction .

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 2-4 hours. The surgeon cuts a strip of skin from the pre-pubic region to the umbilical region, then performs a detachment and sutures the weakened abdominal muscles. Subsequently, a sort of lifting of the abdominal flap is performed, which is sutured at the level of the pre-pubic region, in order to make the scars not very evident. Before terminating the operation, the navel is repositioned to the correct height and drainages are inserted to be kept for at least 48 hours, in order to avoid post-operative edema and accelerate recovery times.

After the operation a compression bandage is applied, to be replaced, after a week with a containing sheath that must be worn for a month. The results are visible in 2-3 months and can be maintained for a long time if a balanced diet is followed associated with regular physical activity.
