Directions BASSADO ® Doxycycline

BASSADO ® is indicated in the treatment of infections of various organs and systems supported by bacteria sensitive to tetracyclines.

Mechanism of action BASSADO ® Doxycycline

Doxycycline, the active ingredient of BASSADO ® and second generation semisynthetic tetracycline, is a semisynthetic derivative of oxytetracycline, distinguished by the high liposolubility that facilitates membrane permeability by optimizing its therapeutic efficacy.

Like other tetracyclines, doxycycline also performs its therapeutic action by penetrating through a special protein channel into the bacterial cytoplasm and binding to the 30S bacterial ribosomal subunit, thus preventing the extension of the peptide chain by tRNA.

The wide spectrum of action and the excellent pharmacokinetic properties make doxycycline an antibiotic widely used in the clinical setting for the treatment of various pathologies sustained both by Gram positive and negative bacteria and as shown by recent studies also by ticks of the genus Ixodes and spirochetes such as Borrelia Burgdoferi, a causative agent of Lyme disease.

The pharmacokinetic characteristics of doxycycline allow the patient to take BASSADO ® by mouth, allowing the active ingredient to reach maximum plasma concentration in about 2-4 hours, and carry out its therapeutic action for about 15 hours, after which it is mainly excreted through the kidney and minimally through a hepatic metabolism.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

1 DOXYCHYCLYLIN IN THE TREATMENT OF ACNE AGMINATE

Dermatol Ther. 2012 Mar; 25 (2): 207-9.

Aginated acne is a rare disease characterized by a strong inflammatory dermatosis that affects young adults, for which the etiopathogenesis is still doubtful. In this study, treatment with doxycycline and isionazide proved effective, improving the quality of life of the affected patient.

2 . DOXYCHYCLINES AND NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES

Int J Geriatr Psychiatry. 2012 Jun 21.

Important study that denies the neuroprotective efficacy of doxycycline supported by previous studies. In this significant clinical trial the treatment for 12 months with doxycycline and rifampin did not improve in any way the cognitive functions of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

3. THE EFFICACY OF DOXYCYCLIN IN THE TREATMENT OF FILARIOSIS

Clin Infect Dis. 2012 Jun 19.

Study demonstrating that patients with lymphoedema due to filariasis may benefit from treatment with doxycycline for six weeks, reducing peripheral edema and dermatolymphoangioadenitis typical of this parasitic pathology

Method of use and dosage

BASSADO ®

Doxycycline 100 mg tablets.

Generally the recommended dosage in the treatment of bacterial infections is that of 100 - 200 mg of doxycycline daily taken in one or two different administrations.

An adjustment of the excess dosage could be required for serious pathologies with a chronic course such as primary syphilis, in defect instead in the treatment of pathologies such as periodontitis.

Particular care should be given to patients suffering from kidney disease, given the reduced excretion capacity of the drug.

The intake of BASSADO ® must necessarily take place under strict medical supervision.

In order to avoid possible relapses it is advisable to prolong the therapy for at least 48 hours after the disappearance of the symptoms.

Warnings BASSADO ® Doxycycline

The use of BASSADO ® should be justified by clinical and microbiological evidence able to identify and characterize the sensitivity of the microorganism to the antibiotic, reducing the inadequate use of antibiotics, responsible for the propagation of antibiotic-resistant microbial strains and side effects for patient health.

In fact, prolonged use of tetracycline could facilitate intestinal colonization by microorganisms such as Clostridium difficile, responsible for serious pathologies including pseudo-membranous colitis.

Known metabolism and potential side effects of tetracyclines, particular caution should be reserved for patients in pediatric and geriatric age or suffering from liver and kidney diseases.

It is recommended to take BASSADO ® with plenty of water while maintaining the upright position following ingestion of the tablet, in order to avoid the onset of ulcers and erosions of the esophageal mucosa.

The use of tetracycline exposes the patient to the risk of burns, erythema and dermatological reactions following exposure to ultraviolet rays, due to the photosensitivity induced by the antibiotic.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

The intake of BASSADO ® is generally contraindicated during pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding, given the absence of studies able to fully characterize the safety profile of the drug for fetal health. Any recruitment, supported by therapeutic needs, should take place under the strict supervision of a specialist doctor.

Interactions

Different pharmacokinetic studies have shown that the simultaneous administration of BASSADO ® and antacid preparations based on aluminum, calcium and magnesium can significantly reduce the oral absorption of the drug, thus compromising the antibiotic efficacy of the therapy.

A further reduction in the therapeutic efficacy of doxycycline could be achieved following the simultaneous intake of penicillins.

Antibiotic therapies prolonged over time, compromising the intestinal microflora, could alter the normal absorption profile of various active ingredients, including that of oral contraceptives, thus reducing the contraceptive action.

Contraindications BASSADO ® Doxycycline

The use of BASSADO ® is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to tetracycline and its excipients.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

Tetracycline treatment is generally well tolerated and has no clinically relevant side effects.

Despite this, therapy with BASSADO ® could cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, glossitis, headache, paresthesia, dizziness, anemia, neutropenia, eosinophilia, dermatological reactions such as urticaria, erythema and edema.

Prolonged use of tetracycline could result in increased blood urea and plasma creatinine due to the catabolic action of the drug, as well as dental discoloration and enamel hypoplasia in children.

Note

BASSADO ® is a medicine subject to medical prescription.
