Definition

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, following infections (viral hepatitis, such as A, B, C, D and E), toxic substances (alcohol, drugs, poisonous fungi such as Amanita phalloides), autoimmune diseases and metabolic factors. Hepatitis can be acute or chronic; the first ones resolve positively within six months, while the chronic forms last for a long time and tend to degenerate into cirrhosis. Among the main causes of hepatitis, both acute and chronic, we mention alcohol, some drugs (including paracetamol) and a group of viruses, called hepatitis viruses.

Further indications

The symptoms of hepatitis are generally non-specific; often blurred or even absent, they can also arise abruptly and violently (fulminant hepatitis, whose poor prognosis can only be reversed by resorting to organ transplantation). It is sometimes possible to recognize general flu-like symptoms (low-grade fever, malaise, etc.). More specific symptoms may arise in advanced stages and include: abdominal pain localized in the upper right region of the abdomen and accentuated by palpation, yellow coloring of the skin and ocular scleras (jaundice).
