Pain, heat, redness and swelling of the finger - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The presence of pain, heat, redness and swelling indicates an ongoing inflammatory process. The causes of this inflammation are to be found in traumas, infectious processes or pathologies of an inflammatory nature, local or systemic. For example, when this set of symptoms occurs at the level of the fingers, disorders of the hand, foot or nails may be responsible, including paronychia, patertiae (including the herpetic patereclerum), ingrown toenails, bite wounds or infected tenosynovitis of the flexors. Local infections often begin with constant, intense and throbbing pain, while trauma to the fingers often also causes nail changes.

Pain, heat, redness and swelling of the finger may also occur under systemic conditions, such as arthritis, kidney and liver disorders, reactions to insect bites and disorders of the circulation or lymphatic system.
