Indications CEPOREX ® Cefalexina

CEPOREX ® is used in gynecology, otorhinolaryngology, urology, dermatology and medicine for the treatment of bacterial infections sustained by Gram positive and Gram negative microorganisms.

Mechanism of action CEPOREX ® Cefalexin

Cephalexin, the active ingredient in CEPOREX ®, is an antibiotic belonging to the first generation cephalosporin class that can be taken orally.

Returning to the beta-lactam antibiotics, the cephalosporins share the same mechanism of action with penicillins, characterized by the inhibition of the transpeptidation reaction that compromises the structural properties of the peptidoglycan, therefore of the bacterial wall, thus favoring the osmotic lysis of the microorganism.

Despite the common pharmacodynamic properties, cephalosporins are distinguished from penicillins in addition to their chemical structure also due to the increased resistance to bacterial penicillinases and to the wide spectrum of action.

Taken orally cephalexin is almost completely absorbed at the gastro-intestinal level, reaching the plasma peak in about an hour and persisting in circulation for 4-6 hours.

Distributed between the various tissues and in particular at the renal and hepatic level, cephalexin carries out its microbicidal activity, at the end of which it is rapidly eliminated through the urine.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

1. THE CEPHALEXINE IN THE TREATMENT OF ACNE VOLGARE

Pediatr Dermatol. 2008 Mar-Apr; 25 (2): 179-83.

Clinical trial conducted on 93 patients with acne vulgaris who showed that in 78% of patients cephalexin treatment guaranteed important clinical improvements, without serious side effects.

2 . THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CEPHALOXIN IN THE INFECTIONS OF THE SKIN AND SOFT TISSUES

Pediatrics. 2011 Mar; 127 (3): e573-80. Epub 2011 Feb 21.

Interesting study showing that cephalexin can be effective and safe for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections in children supported by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

3. EXEMPLE FROM CEFALEXINA

Ann Emerg Med. 2011 Dec; 58 (6): 508, 516.

Case report reporting the appearance of a generalized acute pustular rash after taking cephalexin. It is precisely for these reasons that it is fundamental to carry out an accurate medical history before administering cephalosporins.

Method of use and dosage

CEPOREX ®

500 mg coated tablets - 1000 mg of cephalexin.

The antibiotic treatment with CEPOREX ® should be supervised by your doctor who, after carefully assessing the patient's health and the severity of the relative clinical picture, could define the ideal dosage.

In adults, the therapeutic range is between 1 and 4 gr of cephalexin per day, divided into 2-4 administrations every 6 - 12 hours.

Variations in the dosages used should be considered in patients with hepatic and renal diseases and in elderly or pediatric patients.

Warnings CEPOREX ® Cefalexina

Therapy with CEPOREX ® should be preceded by a careful anamnestic evaluation useful for treating any contraindications to treatment, such as previous hypersensitivity reactions to antibiotics.

Particular caution should therefore be reserved for these patients and for all those with impaired renal function, given the high susceptibility to side effects of antibiotic therapy with cephalosporins.

Treatment with CEPOREX ® should be supervised by your doctor in order to reduce the occurrence of possible side effects, in some cases clinically relevant.

Inappropriate use of CEPOREX ® could facilitate the spread of cephalosporin-resistant microorganisms, for which antibiotic therapy would be ineffective.

The appearance of persistent diarrhea that requires the possible integration of liquids and electrolytes should alarm the doctor, fueling the suspicion of the appearance of pseudomembranous colitis thus suggesting the need to suspend the therapy in progress.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

Although experimental studies do not show serious side effects on the fetus, following the use of antibiotics during pregnancy, it would be advisable to limit the use of CEPOREX ® during the gestational period to cases of real need and under strict medical supervision.

Interactions

The patient undergoing CEPOREX ® therapy should pay attention to the possible co-administration of active ingredients capable of varying the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of cephalexin.

More precisely the contextual assumption of:

  • Probenecid, could alter the pharmacokinetic characteristics of cephalexin by increasing the risk of side effects;
  • Potentially nephrotoxic drugs could increase the kidney damage induced by cephalexin when taken at high doses.

It is also useful to remember that taking antibiotics, compromising the normal intestinal flora, could alter the absorption profile of oral contraceptives, reducing the contraceptive effect.

For this reason, during the antibiotic treatment it would be advisable to use contraceptive methods of coverage.

Contraindications CEPOREX ® Cephalexin

The use of CEPOREX ® is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to penicillins and cephalosporins or their excipients.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

Several clinical trials and subsequent post-marketing monitoring have shown that the intake of cephalexin may be associated with the appearance of side effects that are sometimes clinically relevant.

Candidiasis, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting, headache, dizziness, atralgia, rash, urticaria and hypersensitivity reactions are the most frequently observed adverse reactions following the intake of CEPOREX ®.

The incidence and severity of these reactions appears to be proportional to the duration and therapeutic doses used.

Note

CEPOREX ® is a prescription-only drug.
