Urticaria: can it be caused by physical activity?

Physical exertion, increased body temperature and intense sweating during sport may be the cause of a particular skin reaction, which is part of the large family of cholinergic hives .

This event can also be triggered by a hot shower or sauna immediately after exercise. In some cases, urticaria is induced even by the consumption of foods rich in histamine, before or after physical activity.

How it manifests itself

After a few minutes of exercise (5-15 minutes), especially if the activity is carried out in a particularly heated environment and there is abundant sweating, a strong itching, a sense of heat and an extended skin erythema may occur. In addition to skin symptoms, headaches, dyspnoea, hypotension and vomiting may also occur.

Generally, these manifestations resolve spontaneously at the end of physical activity. The diagnosis is obtained with an accurate medical history and a visit that includes an exercise test.
