Inflammation and rupture of the Achilles tendon: the main features

A tendon is a band of connective tissue that connects a muscle to a bone.

The Achilles tendon is that band of connective tissue that joins the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel.

The inflammation of the Achilles tendon, or yarrow tendinitis, is a typical overuse injury that occurs due to a continuous strain on the tendon in question.

Usually it affects sportsmen who perform repetitive motor activities, such as running, but it can also affect people from middle age upwards (NB: old age weakens the tendons) who practice sports only on weekends.

Except in special cases - which may require pharmacological and surgical therapies - the treatment envisaged consists of rest only.

Rupture of the Achilles tendon, on the other hand, is a serious injury that occurs when the tendon fibers in question are completely damaged. Those who practice sports such as football, rugby or volleyball - which perform numerous changes of direction - can be particularly prevalent, but can also concern individuals with an active life who accidentally slip or hurt a foot.
