Symptoms Digestive congestion

Definition

Digestive congestion is a disorder that affects the gastrointestinal tract and occurs more frequently in the summer, due to a sudden temperature change in the abdomen area.

At the origin of this phenomenon, there is a digestive block almost always due to a sudden temperature change. In fact, blood is concentrated in the stomach area during digestion. The consumption of an iced drink when you are very hot, a shot of cold air or a swim in the sea after a meal triggers a defensive reaction from the body: the brain, in the face of an emergency, tries to hijack the blood towards him, in order to maintain the basal temperature. The result is a circulatory imbalance, which causes, in addition to the interruption of the digestive process, a sort of shock that can have dramatic consequences.

Further indications

The person suffering from digestive congestion suddenly pales, trembles, sweats cold and suddenly feels exhausted. After a few minutes, severe abdominal pain appears, with cramps in the pit of the stomach, nausea and vomiting. Other symptoms that can signal the occurrence of digestive congestion include blurred vision, dizziness and loss of consciousness. In some cases, heart failure can occur.

At the first sign of discomfort, it is necessary to lie down with the legs just raised with respect to the head and keep the belly warm, resting the hands on the abdomen to help restore the digestive process. In case of congestion, it may be useful to drink something warm in small sips, such as, for example, room temperature water or chamomile.

After about an hour, residual manifestations are possible, such as a sense of dizziness and tiredness to the muscles and limbs. If the symptomatology is more serious, instead, it is better to look for a prompt medical help.

In any case, be careful and avoid exposing yourself to cold for at least 3 hours after a full meal or 1-2 hours when eating a light snack (eg sandwich, salad etc.).
