What diseases can mosquitoes transmit?

Mosquitoes are the animals that claim the most victims among humans all over the world. The most fearsome are those of the genus Anopheles, which represent the main vehicle of malaria transmission. Chikungunya and Dengue are viral diseases triggered by the bite, usually of infected mosquitoes of the genus Aedes . The West Nile virus infection, on the other hand, is a disease transmitted mainly by the genus Culex . Mosquitoes are also carriers of yellow fever, Rift Valley fever, Japanese encephalitis and filariasis .

In Italy and Europe, the risks are still limited. The danger, however, cannot be excluded for the future: mosquitoes are increasingly present even at our latitudes due to global warming .

Even globalization, responsible for an intense movement of people and goods, could contribute to the establishment of "dangerous" species of the carrier on the Italian territory.
