Definition

Thrombophlebitis is a condition in which the inflammation of a superficial vein (phlebitis) leads to the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) which occludes its internal lumen. Generally, thrombophlebitis affects the legs, less frequently involving the upper limbs.

Further indications

Thrombophlebitis is a common complication of varicose veins. Characteristic symptoms include pain and swelling localized to the affected limb, which increases in volume following the inflammatory process, while the overlying skin appears warm and reddened.
