Ebola: why is plasma transfusion from convalescent subjects attempted?

A valuable therapy for people infected with Ebola could be the so-called convalescent plasma .

The principle is similar to that of vaccines : people who have been infected and overcome the disease should have developed antibodies against the virus, so transfusions of their blood could help the immune system of the newly infected to overcome the infection.

The World Health Organization has also stressed that this approach should take priority over the experimental therapies used to stem the epidemic. In reality, the effect of the treatment is still not well known and some scientists believe that the transfusions could even produce the opposite result. Meanwhile, new potential therapies continue to be evaluated.
