Hypokinesia - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Hypokinesia is a disorder characterized by a reduction or slowness of intentional body movements.

Parkinson's disease and the conditions that cause parkinsonism represent the majority of hypokinetic disorders.

Secondary parkinsonian syndromes, characterized by hypokinesia, muscle rigidity, resting tremor and postural instability, are often associated with other primitive neurological diseases or dysmetabolic disorders. Furthermore, they can recognize a vascular etiology (ischemic lesions at the level of the basal ganglia) and infectious (post-encephalitic parkinsonism).

Parkinsonisms responsible for hypokinesia can also be induced by repeated trauma, hydrocephalus, hypoparathyroidism and brain tumors.

Other causes of hypokinesia include taking drugs that block dopamine receptors (eg phenothiazine, tioxanthene, butyrophenones and reserpine) and exposure to toxic agents.
