Caffeine in Drugs

In addition to finding ample space in energy drinks and weight control supplements, caffeine is part of the formulation of real medicinal specialties.

This substance has indeed proved useful:

  • in the treatment and prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in premature newborns. In these circumstances, the use of caffeine helps to improve weight gain during therapy and to reduce the incidence of cerebral palsy and delays in cognitive and language development. On the other hand, mild side effects are possible in the case of long-term use.
  • In the primary treatment (but not in the relative prevention) of apnea in premature infants (eg Peyona ®).
  • In the treatment of orthostatic hypotension (sharp drop in pressure when the upright pressure is assumed).

Caffeine is also present in some over-the-counter medications for the control of pain and headaches, ensuring greater efficacy of the characterizing active ingredient and its faster absorption.

Often, caffeine is present in the form of caffeine citrate, which guarantees a faster onset of its therapeutic effect.
