Definition

Pyuria is the presence of pus in the urine.

In general, pyuria is the expression of an inflammatory state or an infection of the urinary tract; therefore, it can be a symptom of pyelonephritis, pionephrosis, cystitis, urethritis, kidney stones, nephritis or prostatitis.

On cytological examination of urine, in the case of pyuria, there is a noticeable increase in the number of leukocytes (white blood cells), which must be investigated by urine culture. If no microorganism responsible for the infection is found, the pyuria is called aseptic or sterile; this condition may indicate the presence of a tuberculosis infection (renal tuberculosis), analgesic nephropathy or a condition that is not completely resolved with antibiotic therapy.
