Erectile dysfunction, which is most improperly referred to as "impotence", is a disorder of the male sexual sphere, characterized by an objective inability to achieve and maintain an erection that allows satisfactory sexual intercourse. The mechanism of erection can be altered by multiple factors, in some cases even concomitant and in any case not exclusively linked to the psychological sphere, as was believed until some time ago. The different causes that can determine the onset of erectile dysfunction are psychogenic, endocrine, neurogenic, vascular (arterial and venous), pharmacological, surgical, radiotherapeutic and predisposing conditions. It is important to underline that of the different possible causes, some are "not modifiable" because they are linked to pathological situations, while others are instead "modifiable" because they are linked to behavioral factors (smoking and alcohol abuse, but also obesity and sedentariness are factors predisposing the problems of erectile dysfunction).
