Drugs to Treat Bacterial Vaginosis

Definition

Bacterial vaginosis is a very common infection of the vagina and the mucosa that covers it, in which there is an important alteration of the physiological bacterial flora.

Causes

Bacterial vaginosis is mainly caused by the synergistic action of several microbial strains, which, finding favorable conditions, colonize the vagina to the detriment of lactobacilli. Among the most involved microorganisms, Gardnerella vaginalis plays a leading role.

Symptoms

It should be noted that about half of women with bacterial vaginosis do not experience any symptoms. However, among the most frequent symptoms can not miss the smelly white-grayish vaginal discharge. Vaginal irritations and intimate burning are possible symptoms in the case of bacterial vaginosis, although more frequent in Candida infections (candidiasis) and Trichomonas (trichomoniasis).

drugs

As analyzed for Gardnerella infections in general, even in the case of bacterial vaginosis the use of antibiotics such as metronidazole or clindamycin represents the therapy of choice. Sometimes the use of Tinidazole is also useful .

  • METRONIDAZOLE (eg Metronid, Deflamon, Flagyl): the antibiotic therapy for excellence against bacterial vaginosis involves the use of metronidazole. Orally, it is recommended to take one 300 mg tablet twice a day for 7 consecutive days. Alternatively, it is possible to take a single dose of drug (high dose). The topical application of the drug is also possible: generally the duration of the therapy for topical use is around 5 days, except for further indications from the treating doctor.
  • Tinidazole (eg. Trimonase, Fasigin-N): it is recommended to administer this antibiotic at a dose of 2 grams per day, on a full stomach for two consecutive days; alternatively, take 1 gram of the drug once a day on a full stomach for 5 days. Do not take the drug in pregnancy: consult your doctor.
  • Clindamycin (eg Dalacin-T, Clindamycin BIN, Zindaclin, Dalacin-C): applied topically, this drug is particularly useful for combating bacterial vaginosis. Generally the duration of therapy for topical use is around 7 days.

However, this antibiotic can also be taken orally at a dose of 300 mg twice a day.

NB it is recommended that the sexual partner also follow the same antibiotic therapy, in order to avoid the spread of the infection and possible complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and sterility.

Prevention of bacterial vaginosis

The most effective therapy for bacterial vaginosis is undoubtedly prevention; below are some simple rules of a hygienic-behavioral nature, useful for preventing both complications from bacterial vaginosis and recurrences:

  • Proper intimate hygiene
  • Avoid excessively aggressive vaginal cleansing, responsible for altering vaginal pH
  • Take probiotics in case of concomitant antibiotic intake
  • Use barrier contraceptive methods (eg condoms) during sexual intercourse with individuals at risk
  • Do not use irritating perfumed / cleansing talcum powder
  • Use cotton linen
