Small buttock

The small gluteal muscle is a flat muscle with a triangular shape. It lies deeply with respect to the gluteus medius muscle and is covered by the deep gluteal fascia. It originates from the external face of the ileum (in front of the anterior gluteal line) and from the external lip of the iliac crest.

Its fibers converge obliquely downwards and are inserted on the front surface of the great femoral trochanter.

It works in synergy with the average gluteus muscle by abducting and intramusculating the femur. Its potency is about three times lower than that of the average gluteal muscle.

It is innervated by the superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1).
