alcohol and alcohol

Alcoholic degree

The alcohol content represents the volume of alcohol, expressed in milliliters, contained in one deciliter of a given drink. This means that a wine with an alcohol content of 12 contains 12 milliliters of alcohol per 100 ml of product. According to the more general definition, but also more rigorous, of the current legislature, the alcohol content or alcohol rate represents:

the number of parts by volume of pure alcohol, at a temperature of 20 ° C, contained in 100 parts by volume of the product, considered at the same temperature.

It is no coincidence that the alcohol content is expressed in a number followed by% Vol. In the previous example we have therefore seen that 100 ml of our wine contain 12 milliliters of alcohol, but obviously the same proportion can be made for different volumes; so, for example, a liter of wine will contain 120 ml of alcohol, while half a liter will contain only 60.

What is important to remember is that the alcohol content is based on volumes and not on grams; in fact the wine considered in the example does not contain 12 grams of alcohol per 100 ml, but 12 ml of alcohol per 100 ml. At this point, to determine how many grams of alcohol this volume corresponds to, simply multiply it by 0.79 g / ml, the number corresponding to the density of the ethyl alcohol or ethanol. We deduce that a drink with an alcohol content of 12 contains 9.5 grams of alcohol per 100 ml. More generally, to find out how many grams of alcohol contains a known quantity of a given beverage, simply enter the data in the following formula:

Grams of alcohol = (ml of drink x alcohol degree x 0.79) / 100
