Dysalculia - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Dyscalculia is a specific learning disorder that occurs in the developmental age.

This condition is characterized by reduced calculation skills, from the point of view both of the organization of numerical cognition, and of mathematical reasoning strategies.

Therefore, the basic performance of these intellectually able children is below the expected level with respect to chronological age and the class attended.

Dyscalculia prevents the achievement of adequate levels of rapidity and correctness in arithmetic operations (such as solving problems, calculating in mind and storing tables) and procedural difficulties in the calculation (eg serial count in ascending and descending order, identification of orders of magnitude, recognition and naming of mathematical symbols, reading and writing of numbers, etc.).

This interferes negatively with scholastic learning and with daily activities requiring computational skills (logical and mathematical disciplines, physics and chemistry).

Dyscalculia does not depend on organic diseases or neurological damage; this disorder can occur along with dyslexia, dysgraphia and dysorthography.
