Definition

Herpes simplex is an infectious disease, caused by the homonymous virus, which affects the skin and mucous membranes of the facial and / or genital region. The two herpetic forms caused by this organism are HSV I and HSV II. The first widespread form is responsible for the appearance of blisters filled with clear liquid, commonly called "fevers", in the facial skin, particularly in the lips (cold sores). The same vesicles can also appear in the genital region, where they cause pain and discomfort, often persisting for a few weeks after recovery; one speaks in these cases of genital herpes (HSV II). Both forms contract with direct physical and sexual contact.

Further indications

The classic roundish vesicles caused by herpes simplex typically appear in areas of transition from the skin to the mucosa and tend to clump into clusters. Their content, initially serous, subsequently tends to become purulent. These bubbles break within a few days forming a characteristic dark crust. The recovery, however, is only apparent, since the viruses take refuge in the local nerve endings, ready to take advantage of any decline in immune defenses (fever, stress, hormonal changes, sun exposure, trauma). The reactivation of these viruses causes the recurrence of the typical symptoms of herpes simplex.
