Mood disorders - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Mood disorders include a set of conditions characterized by a persistent or recurrent series of psycho-physical symptoms, excessively high or reduced.

The most frequent mood disorders are depression (excessive lowering of mood) and bipolar disorder (moments of depression alternate with mania, or pathological euphoria).

Sadness can be considered a universal human response to disappointments and adverse situations (eg abandonment of the family environment, death of a loved one, etc.), just as euphoria is linked to success and the achievement of goals. However, if these emotional reactions are too intense and last too long, or arise in the absence of a triggering event, they must be considered abnormal.

Mood disorders can be related to the presence of neurological and organic disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, neoplasms and some chronic diseases. Therefore, the result of the combination of individual predisposition, unfavorable environmental factors and dysfunctions of some brain circuits can be considered.

The psychophysical symptoms associated with mood disorders depend on the specific condition and may vary from person to person. However, these may include: fatigue, fatigue, drastic increase or decrease in body weight, steady gaze, decreased libido and sexual efficiency, chest tightness and heart disease, dysuria, dyspepsia, constipation, insomnia or hypersomnia, agitation and hyperactivity of the system autonomous nervous system. Mood disorders, unlike normal emotional reactions, also lead to a significant impairment of social interactions and work skills.
