IRIDINA LIGHT ® is indicated for cleaning and disinfecting the ocular mucosa.

Action mechanism IRIDINA LIGHT ® Benzalkonium chloride

IRIDINA LIGHT ® is an eyewash based on Benzalkonium chloride, quaternary ammonium salt known for its antiseptic and disinfectant properties.

Used topically, this active ingredient is able to interact with the membranes of bacterial cells, altering their normal structure and causing the formation of pores that inevitably allow nutrients, enzymes and coenzymes to pass through to the point of greatly limiting the biosynthetic capabilities of the pathogen .

This activity, effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and some fungi, guarantees an excellent disinfectant activity, however limited by the poor sensitivity of spores towards Benzalkonium chloride.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

HYALURONIC ACID AND BENZALCONIUM CHLORIDE

Mol Vis. 2011; 17: 3364-70. Epub 2011 Dec 21.

Yet another study that demonstrates how the addition of hyaluronic acid to Benzirconio chloride based eye drops can reduce the side effects of this active ingredient and in particular the genotoxic and pro-apoptotic effect.

BENZALCONIUM CHLORIDE AND EXCIPIENTS

J Oleo Sci. 2013; 62 (3): 159-66.

Work that shows how the addition of excipients such as sericin can reduce the toxicity of Benzalkonium chloride, thus enhancing the therapeutic effects of the active ingredient, limiting the collateral ones.

BENZALCONIUM CHLORIDE AND EYE TOXICITY

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci. 2013 May 9; 54 (5): 3385-93. doi: 10.1167 / iovs.12-11181.

Experimental study which demonstrates the toxicity of benzalkonium chloride at high doses on the ocular mucosa, identifies potential excipients such as sodium hyaluronate capable of reducing the potential side effects of the disinfectant.
