Indications SILVERMED ® Benzalkonium chloride

SILVERMED ® is indicated for cleaning and disinfection of intact and damaged skin.

Mechanism of action SILVERMED ® Benzalkonium chloride

Benzalkonium chloride, the active ingredient of SILVERMED ®, is a quaternary ammonium salt characterized by a chemical structure responsible for its antiseptic activity.

In fact, this active ingredient can:

  • at low concentrations, alter the normal structure of the bacterial membrane, causing the formation of pores and lesions capable of altering the cellular network, leading to the loss of enzymes, coenzymes and nutrients.
  • at high concentrations, they interact with membrane and non-membrane proteins, altering their structure.

The aforementioned actions result in the inhibition of protein synthesis which inevitably leads to the death of the bacterial cell, in limited periods of time.

However, the bactericidal activity, effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative and some fungi, is strongly limited with respect to spores and mycobacteria.
