Ebola: what are the causes of patient death?

From 2 to 21 days after infection, the first symptoms of ebola to appear are fever, intense weakness, joint and muscle pain, headache and laryngitis, followed by vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. From the fifth to the seventh day, a characteristic rash may develop, with spots and small bubbles.

As the disease progresses, liver or kidney failure, coagulation problems and bleeding from the gastrointestinal mucous membranes and genital organs may occur. The patient usually has between 6 and 16 days to fight and defeat the virus, otherwise serious bleeding and cardiovascular collapse can lead to death. Mortality varies according to the Ebola virus strain and the care provided.
