Micellar water

What is Micellar Water

Micellar water is a water-based cleaning solution, which removes make-up residues and impurities from the face and around the eyes, respecting their physiology.

The product is based on micelle technology, that is, surfactant molecules that come together to form small spheres. These agglomerates are able to incorporate and eliminate impurities and traces of smog, sebum and make-up.

In addition to the basic elements consisting of water and micelles, the micellar water can be enriched with functional moisturizing and soothing substances, but also from natural plant and mineral extracts.

Unlike other facial cleansers, this product cleans deeply without affecting the hydro-lipid barrier of the epidermis, which normally protects the skin from external aggressions. Micellar water allows you to remove make-up from the skin with a simple and quick gesture: just dampen a cotton pad and gently wipe it over your face, without rubbing. Usually, then, you don't have to rinse.

Thanks to their high tolerability, micellar waters are the best choice in case of sensitive skin, as they allow to cleanse without causing irritation and with a good quality-price ratio.

How does it work?

Micellar water is based on the technology of specific ingredients, able to come together in spherical agglomerates: micelles . When they come into contact with the skin, these molecules open and absorb surface impurities, make-up residues (even waterproof), dirt, sebum, sweat and peeling cells, without altering the hydro-lipid balance of the epidermis.

The micelles have the ability to orient themselves and to interact with both water-soluble and liposoluble substances; for this reason, these molecules manage to "attract" dirt, removing it.

The spherical conformation of the micelles also makes it possible not to modify the structure of the skin (it does not eliminate or solubilize the structural lipids), guaranteeing a delicate action and ensuring an emollient effect .

Micellar water leaves the skin fresh, clean and ready to receive your favorite beauty treatments. With a single gesture, therefore, this solution performs the action of three cosmetics: it is possible to remove make-up from the face, eyes and lips and, at the same time, tone and moisturize the skin, without weighing it down or drying it.

Curiosity: when was the micellar water born?

Micellar water is a cosmetic formulated towards the end of the 80s, as a professional product to speed up the change of models' make-up. In the beginning, in fact, this cleaning solution was used in the backstage of fashion shows.

When it entered the large-scale retail trade, micellar water had a rather high selling price. Over the years, companies dedicated to cosmetics, sensing the potential of this product, have proposed different formulations suitable for daily use and with a more affordable cost.

What is it for?

The main function of micellar water is to cleanse the skin in depth . The micelles contained in the product capture impurities and make-up residues, leaving the skin clean and hydrated.

With a single gesture, the micellar water performs three actions at the same time:

  • It gently cleans and purifies the skin, as it is usually free of soap, alcohol, coloring agents and parabens; it also eliminates water-resistant make-up (waterproof).
  • Helps to regularize excess sebum production .
  • Protects the hydrolipidic film and promotes hydration.

Another aspect not to be underestimated is the practicality: a single product to be used with a cotton pad, which does not require rinsing. For these reasons, micellar water is an excellent alternative to the classic make-up remover lotion or the combination of cleansing and tonic milk.

Not just to remove make-up

Daily facial cleansing is a fundamental beauty gesture, necessary to remove make-up and all the impurities accumulated during the day. In particular, the evening démaquillage operation removes all traces of make-up, leaving the skin soft, fresh and ready to absorb subsequent treatments more easily.

If this routine is not performed correctly, the pores of the skin can become clogged and the complexion may appear less luminous. Facial cleansers must perfectly remove make-up and clean the skin, respecting it and, at the same time, making the functional substances contained in them.

How to use

The use of micellar water is very practical: just dampen a cotton pad with a small amount of solution, then dab it onto the skin of the entire face, as for a normal make-up removal operation.

The product is capable of removing make-up with a quick gesture, without having to rub or irritate the area. To ensure a better effect on the periocular area, it is advisable to leave the discs soaked in micellar water over the eyelids for a few seconds, so as to be able to eliminate any remaining makeup.

Usually, on how to use the label it is reported that the micellar water does not need to be rinsed. In reality, even if this product acts as a tonic, it could leave a slight patina on the skin. If this effect is unpleasant, after cleaning, it is possible to pass a disk soaked in thermal water on the face. On the other hand, it is better to avoid tap water, since the limestone it contains could weigh down the skin again.

How to choose micellar water

On the market, different types of micellar water are available, in which the specific ingredients for each type of skin are added to the basic formula (ie the detergent part): normal or dry, subject to redness, mixed or oily.

  • In the case of normal or dry skin, micellar water can provide an extra dose of vitamins and moisturizing substances, such as hyaluronic acid. During cleaning, these ingredients can help to re-compact the outer layer of the skin, so as to restore softness and radiance to the face.
  • When there are visible impurities and imperfections, typical of a mixed, oily and acne-prone skin, on the other hand, it is possible to choose a detergent with targeted active ingredients, such as copper sulfate and zinc gluconate, with a purifying and regulating action on the sebum production.
  • The micellar solution best suited to sensitive or reactive skin has a physiological pH and performs a softening action, made possible by ingredients such as thermal water. Furthermore, the product should not contain soap, alcohol, dyes and parabens. The ideal micellar water for sensitive skin should not contain substances that can predispose to irritative and allergic reactions.
  • If the face is prone to couperose or redness, the indicated micellar water contains ingredients and natural substances useful in rebuilding the lipid protection barrier, such as glycerin and allantoin. The soothing active ingredients, on the other hand, reduce the sensation of "pulling skin", often associated with cleaning and removing makeup. Some solutions also work as a sort of "pack" that soothes, repairs and relieves irritated and stressed skin.
