Prognathism - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Prognathism is a conformation of the face characterized by the protrusion of the maxillary bone or jaw forward. In particular, when the mandible protrudes with respect to the jaw, it is called mandibular prognathism or progeny. The maxillary prognathism, on the other hand, indicates the forward protrusion of the jaw compared to the mandibular bone. This defect can be found in the case of acromegaly, but it can also be a consequence of incorrect development of the dental arches or incorrect habits, such as thumb sucking or swallowing with the tongue interposed between the teeth. Prognathism leads to malocclusion, joint pain and chewing problems.
