Definition

Conjunctivitis is an inflammatory process affecting the conjunctiva, caused by infections, allergies or irritations of a chemical or physical nature. The conjunctiva, which internally covers the eyelid and forms the front and outer part of the eye, appears swollen and reddened, and secretes an aqueous or sometimes purulent substance. Although the symptoms of conjunctivitis are rather irritating, they rarely interfere with vision.

Most common symptoms and signs *

  • Eye fatigue
  • Burning eyes
  • Ocular pain
  • Entropion
  • Eyelid swelling
  • Tearing
  • Eyes reddened
  • itch
  • Eye dryness
  • Ocular secretion

Further indications

Redness and itching can affect one or both eyes, as can the unpleasant sensation of a lumpy foreign body. When present, the loss of purulent material from one or both eyes leads to the formation of the typical crust during the night and to the difficulty of opening the eyes upon awakening, as if they were glued. Although the symptoms of conjunctivitis do not generally interfere with vision since the disease can be highly contagious for several days after their appearance, early diagnosis and adequate treatment are very important.
