What to do or avoid in case of eye pain

Eye pain always requires a clinical-instrumental assessment. Many therapeutic approaches, in fact, must be established by the doctor, based on the pathological condition.

Antibiotics or antivirals are prescribed to treat pain-causing eye infections. Antihistamine eye drops, on the other hand, can help alleviate ophthalmodynia associated with allergic conjunctivitis. For corneal lesions, corticosteroids and local anesthetics may be indicated, while systemic analgesics are prescribed as needed.

In children, trauma and infections are the most frequent causes of eye pain; for this reason, it is important to pay attention to certain behaviors, such as rubbing your eyes frequently.

To relieve ophthalmodynia, it may be useful to lie down with your eyes closed, in a quiet and dark environment. In addition, the doctor may advise you to make cold water compresses and to instill decongestant eye drops or with chamomile and eyebright.
