Hepatitis A and Frozen Berries

Between 2013 and 2014 in Europe and in Italy there was a real epidemic of Hepatitis A, linked to the consumption of lots of frozen or frozen berries contaminated by the HAV virus.

According to reports by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), the causes that generated the contamination would be attributed to consignments of red currants produced in certain regions of Poland and / or blackberries produced in Bulgaria (year and unknown production areas ).

The problem has affected not only the direct consumption of these foods, but also the indirect one, for example through cakes, pastries and ice cream.

The only way to guarantee the healthiness of frozen / frozen berries is to consume them only from cooked, boiling them (bringing them to 100 ° C) for at least 2 minutes.

Clearly, particular attention should be paid to washing containers and utensils used to handle thawed berries so as to avoid cross-contamination.
