Acid regurgitation - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Acid regurgitation

Definition

Acid regurgitation consists in the rising of the stomach contents in the esophagus, sometimes even up to the throat. This symptom can also be associated with an annoying sensation of acid and bitterness in the mouth, and excessive salivation.

Acid regurgitation can represent a sporadic episode, favored by bad eating habits and unhealthy lifestyles. In fact, regurgitation appears above all after large meals, especially if rich in fatty and spicy foods. Even chocolate, coffee and carbonated drinks are able to promote the ascent of stomach contents. Other predisposing factors are smoking, alcohol, heavy physical activity after copious meals and lying or lying down immediately after digestion.

When acid regurgitation occurs frequently and / or in a rather intense manner, it is probably an indication of a real disease, as in the case of gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernia. Acid regurgitation is also favored by esophageal diverticula, anatomical malformations (affecting the stomach, esophagus or cardia) and increased abdominal pressure; the latter is a common problem in cases of obesity and pregnancy.
