Indications VIGAMOX ® Moxifloxacin

VIGAMOX ® is indicated in the topical treatment of ocular infectious diseases sustained by microorganisms sensitive to Moxifloxacin such as purulent bacterial conjunctivitis.

Mechanism of action VIGAMOX ® Moxifloxacin

VIGAMOX ® is an eyewash with antibiotic activity thanks to the presence as an active ingredient of Moxifloxacin, a third generation fluorchinolone known for its excellent pharmacokinetic properties that allow its use topically.

In fact, once instilled, Moxifloxacin is only minimally absorbed systemically, thus being able to perform its action mainly at the topical level, inhibiting both DNA gyrase and DNA topoisomerase IV, thus blocking DNA duplication, hence the consequent bacterial proliferation.

Despite the excellent bacteriostatic activity, the abuse of these drugs has over time determined the spread of microbial strains, in particular Gram-negative, resistant to drug therapy thanks:

  • A mutations in the biological targets of the antibiotic;
  • Expression of efflux pumps that prevent the drug from concentrating inside the drum;
  • Expression of inactivating enzymes that compromise the structural and functional characteristics of the antibiotic.

Drug resistance today represents one of the main limits of the therapeutic efficacy of the drug.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE MOXIFLOXACINA AND DESAMETASONE ASSOCIATION

Clinical trial demonstrating the efficacy and safety of the association between moxifloxacin and dexamethasone in the treatment of ocular infectious diseases, thus demonstrating excellent therapeutic skills.

POST-OPERATIVE PROPHYLAXIS WITH MOXIFLOXACINE

Experimental study conducted on guinea pigs that demonstrates how early instillation of Moxifloxacin following cataract surgery can reduce retinal damage induced by Enterococcus faecalis infection.

MOXIFLOXACINE TENDINOPATHY

Case report that reports the appearance of tendinopathy at the level of the Achilles tendon in a patient undergoing ophthalmic treatment with Moxifloxacin.

This side effect, mainly linked to the systemic use of the drug, is very rare in patients undergoing topical therapy.

Method of use and dosage

VIGAMOX ®

5 mg eye drops of moxifloxacin base per ml of solution.

Generally the ocular application of a drop 3 times a day allows in a few days of treatment to guarantee a remission of the symptoms.

It is recommended to prolong the therapy for the next 2-3 days after the symptoms have disappeared.

Warnings VIGAMOX ® Moxifloxacin

Topical application of Moxifloxacin significantly reduces the risks commonly associated with fluoroquinolone based therapy, although hypersensitivity reactions to the drug have been observed in patients contextually receiving systemic antibiotic therapy.

It is therefore recommended to consult your doctor before taking VIGAMOX ®, considering its ineffectiveness in case of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections caused by the aforementioned resistance mechanisms.

Contact lenses are not recommended during treatment.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

The predominantly local action and the low systemic absorption of the drug make it possible to use VIGAMOX ® during pregnancy and in the subsequent breastfeeding period.

Interactions

At the moment there are no known active ingredients capable of interfering with the topical action of Moxifloxacin taken via VIGAMOX ®.

Contraindications VIGAMOX ® Moxifloxacin

The use of VIGAMOX ® is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to the active substance or to one of its excipients.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

The use of VIGAMOX ® is generally safe and well tolerated, showing side effects, mainly local such as pain, irritation, dryness, itching and ocular hyperaemia.

Note

VIGAMOX ® is a prescription-only drug.
