Jaw pain - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Jaw pain can be a sporadic or recurrent symptom, mild or very intense. It can also affect only part or all of the mandibular bone; sometimes, the pain may radiate to the ear or be located at the dental roots of the lower arch, the masticatory muscles and / or the temporomandibular joint.

Possible causes of jaw pain are: excessive stress, trauma, fractures, infections or tumors of the maxillary bone and jaw, joint problems (eg dislocations, arthrosis or arthritis of the temporomandibular joint etc.) and congenital malformations. In some cases, the pain may also be accompanied by a jerk or blockage of the mandibular movement during chewing. The symptom can also be traced to incorrect postures or misalignment of the spine; in these cases, it is often related to disorders of the neck, shoulders and / or back.

Mandibular pain can also arise for head and neck cancers, sialolithiasis and mumps.

They can cause pain involving the mandibular bone, otitis and various oral cavity pathologies, such as caries, inflammation of the gums, granulomas, neuralgia, rash of a wisdom tooth, malocclusion and bruxism.

Jaw pain can also be a symptom of heart failure.
