Glaucoma: what are the consequences on vision?

Glaucoma is a subtle pathology that compromises visual function following a suffering of the optic nerve, normally used to carry visual signals to the brain. In the eye affected by glaucoma, an excessive production of aqueous humor or an obstacle to its outflow produces an increase in intraocular pressure . The compression inside the eyeball that follows causes vascular damage and death of nerve fibers.

The lesion of the optic nerve results, therefore, in a progressive decline of the sight starting from the peripheral part of the visual field. Glaucoma, if not treated promptly, can lead to blindness.
