Definition

Inflammatory process affecting the trachea, usually following bacterial and especially viral infections of the nose, throat or bronchi. The key symptom is the pain in the chest, behind the sternum, exacerbated by the dry coughing that accompanies it. It can also be caused by the inhalation in the trachea of the gastric contents in the presence of gastroesophageal reflux disease
