Definition
Nephritis is inflammation of the kidney. In relation to the part of the kidney affected by the inflammatory process, there are different forms of nephritis. When speaking of nephritis in general, reference is made to glomerulonephritis (inflammatory process involving the renal glomerulus). It can be caused by an autoimmune process (lupus, IgA nephropathy), an infection (recent strep throat inflammation, AIDS, bacterial endocarditis), some drugs, or kidney or systemic diseases (vasculitis, diabetes and hypertension). Glomerulonephritis can be acute (and in this case the symptoms arise suddenly) or chronic (and in this case the onset is more gradual). Most common symptoms and signs *
