Emoftoe - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The emoftoe is the emission, with the cough, of traces of blood mixed with phlegm . These small blood losses come from the throat, lung or any other part of the respiratory tract.

Streaked expectoration of blood is one of the symptoms of chronic bronchitis, a condition in which productive cough lasts at least 3 months and can be associated with dyspnea, barrel chest, cyanosis and digital hippocratism.

A mucopurulent sputum, sometimes streaked with blood, can also occur in the presence of bronchopneumonia, pulmonary edema, bronchiectasis, embolism with pulmonary infarction and tuberculosis.

The haemoftoe may represent one of the early signs of lung cancer.

The blood in the phlegm also appears in the case of lung injury, rib fracture, congestive heart failure, laryngeal and thyroid cancer, aspergillosis and ebola.

The haemoftoe can be occasional or recurrent: in any case, it must never be neglected and must be differentiated from the hemoptysis, that is the expectoration of pure blood.

The hemoftoe can manifest itself in mild forms or, as in the image, more significant
