Blood from the ear - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Otorrhagia consists of the leakage of blood from the ear. This haemorrhage may originate spontaneously during acute or chronic infectious processes of the ear and in the case of cholesteatoma or cancer of the ear canal. The blood from the ear can also be post-traumatic, that is, manifest itself following ear or cranial traumas (eg accidental falls, road accidents, etc.). The improper use of hygienic wash sticks, a powerful slap or the accidental penetration of foreign bodies, for example, can determine the perforation of the tympanic membrane, therefore otorrhagia. Bleeding from the ear can also occur after fractures of the skull base. Symptoms associated with otorrhagia may include otalgia (earache), fever, pruritus, dizziness, tinnitus and hearing loss.
