Importance of strength in cycling

Edited by: Toni Giuseppe

Training considered, once, purely preparatory to actual work, therefore winter, is now called, more or less by every athlete, throughout the season, including the competitive period.

The study below was performed by Giuseppe Toni of the ASD Cycling Project.

Evaluated the tests carried out throughout the season and denoted a clear drop in the pushing capacity of each boy, we wanted to verify the possibility of avoiding this trend and assess the effects on performance.

the power evaluation tests showed how in the initial period (effect of the gym work) and in the first preparation period, the performances for this type of fundamental were better than in the advanced season periods, when this exercise was not recalled in the weekly training sessions .

Once this result was verified, the following year - with the same athletes and in the same category - a training schedule was set up to take this into account. Considering the type of athlete and the degree of physical maturity, strength training sessions were then included throughout the season.

The following graph shows the results.

The decrease was less than the previous season and never below the initial value, without considering the highest absolute values, due to the improvement in the muscular qualities of the boys caused by age. Protocol and modus operandi were the same, as were the rest of the training sessions. The only difference, the average was calculated on 5 athletes due to injury of one of the group.

The test values (power curve) by themselves would not say much, except that the boys proved to be much more competitive than last season (compared with the same age) and without undergoing major performance changes, also indicating an increase in the pedaling dynamics (cadence) which led to greater energy production.

Power-time curves were also performed with improvements for all athletes, as well as aerobic and anaerobic functions, however, clearly influenced by the boy's physiological growth.

The tests were 6, from December to October every 2 months

The group of 6 athletes

Various types (sprinter climber etc)

Equipment: SRM Hight performance ergometer

Test protocol: isokinetic mode 60 rpm 3 tests 3 '

Athletes: junior

Weight: average 58Kg (54 - 64)
