Product features Melatonin - Ultimate Nutrition

Melatonin: chemically known as N-acetyl 5 methoxytripamine, it is a natural compound produced by a gland at the base of the brain and known as an epiphysis. Its production in the human organism follows a very precise rhythm, defined circadian rhythm, which presents a maximum peak between 00.00 and eight in the morning, and which seems strongly inhibited by sunlight.

Although it is taken through different foods (cocoa, rice and other vegetables), dietary melatonin is not able to significantly increase the plasma levels of the hormone, and therefore a specific supplement is used. In fact, taken in the form of capsules, melatonin is totally absorbed in the intestine for doses up to 2.8 mg, but largely metabolised in the liver, whereby its sulfotoxymelatonin is transformed into its inactive metabolite, so as to lower its bioavailability up to at 15%. The maximum plasma concentration is reached on average after 3 hours, although this time interval seems to be seriously influenced by the nutritional status of the subject. The half-life of melatonin does not normally exceed 4 hours. Through the circulatory stream, linked to plasma proteins for about 60%, melatonin is able to diffuse freely and bind its receptors (MT1, MT2 and MT3) present mainly in the central nervous system.

Biological role : several experimental evidences and numerous studies on this subject show that melatonin has a:

  1. Regulatory effect on the sleep-wake rhythm : through the hypnotic, sedating and inducing effect of sleep;
  2. Antioxidant effect: able to prevent damage induced by both reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. In this case, however, the proportion of committed melatonin is irretrievably lost, since there are no effective reduction reactions. However, its antioxidant action seems quite powerful, since it is also guaranteed by subsequent metabolites.
  3. Protective and anticarcinogenic effect: melatonin appears to be involved in the protection of mitochondrial DNA, protecting it from the mutagenic action of various compounds.
  4. Immunostimulatory action : although not entirely characterized, first evidence shows a significant strengthening of the immune response.

Melatonin and sport

Although not particularly widespread among athletes, in recent years melatonin has also found different applications in sports, where it can be used for:

  1. Guarantee an antioxidant effect, and protect the body from oxidative damage;
  2. Strengthen the immune defenses in the athlete subjected to strenuous training and the risk of overtraining syndrome;
  3. Improve the hormonal profile.

In this regard, worthy of note are some studies in which it is shown:

  1. the metabolic effect of melatonin: able to reduce lactate production during physical activity;
  2. the hormonal effect: where there is an increase in GH levels that is achieved at doses of 0.5mg and 5mg of melatonin per day.

Recent evidence, based on the observation of a hypothermic effect, suggests a potential utility of melatonin in improving performance at high temperatures.

Rationale - Melatonin - Ultimate Nutrition

Melatonin is currently used successfully in all the various sleep disorders, such as jet lag syndrome. However, numerous studies are underway to test its effectiveness also for some neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, pathologies induced by oxidative damage, cardiovascular diseases and others.

In sports, some studies show the efficacy of melatonin in improving hormone secretion and in helping the body's antioxidant function. However there is no improvement derived from the administration of this compound, indeed some studies show how - if taken at the wrong times (example: 60 minutes before training) - melatonin can also reduce GH secretion.

Recommended use by company - Melatonin - Ultimate Nutrition

Take one capsule before sleeping at night.

Use in sports practice Melatonin - Ultimate Nutrition

Also in this case the recommended dose by the manufacturer seems to be the most valid, although more than one study shows that an improvement in nocturnal GH secretion can be obtained even at significantly lower doses, equal to 0.5 mg.

Given the pharmacokinetic properties of the supplement, it would be advisable to take it before going to bed, so that its maximum peak corresponds to the normal endogenous secretion.

Synergy - Melatonin - Ultimate Nutrition

Several studies seem to agree on the greater efficacy of synergy when taken together with zinc. A generalized improvement is obtained both on the strengthening of the immune defenses, on the antioxidant effect and on the metabolic aspect, improving insulin sensitivity.

Some studies show that in the case of prolonged intake of zinc and melatonin, integration with magnesium magnesium also becomes necessary.

The validity of the simultaneous administration of melatonin and vitamin B6, is still under observation, even if the first works show an improvement in the endogenous synthesis of this hormone, with an enhancement of the biological effects related above all to the modulation of the immune and hormonal activity .

Side effects Melatonin - Ultimate Nutrition

Although recent studies have confirmed the high tolerability and safety of the active ingredient, there are cases in literature in which, even at a dose of 3 mg / day, nausea, irritability, nightmares and vascular changes have been observed.

Furthermore, acting as a mild hypnotic and sedative, melatonin may interfere with concentration. By enhancing the immune response, the substance could also worsen the condition of patients suffering from allergic or autoimmune diseases.

Precautions for use Melatonin - Ultimate Nutrition

The product is contraindicated in cases of renal or hepatic disease, cardiovascular disease and / or hypertension, allergies and autoimmune diseases, during pregnancy, during breastfeeding, under 12 years and for adolescents not yet trained.

In the event of prolonged use (over 6/8 weeks), medical advice is required.
