Blood loss after menopause - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

In most women, post-menopausal blood loss is considered an abnormal signal, worthy of medical investigation.

Adequate assessment by a specialist is important to rule out the presence of a gynecological tumor as a trigger. In fact, genital bleeding in post-menopause (after 12 months or more after the last menstruation) is one of the symptoms of endometrial cancer and cervical cancer.

In addition to those of an oncological nature, there are many benign conditions that cause episodes of genital bleeding after menopause. The most common causes are atrophic vaginitis, endometrial atrophy, polyps and endometrial hyperplasia. In some cases, post-menopausal bleeding is a consequence of the withdrawal of exogenous hormones (hormone replacement therapy).
