E528 MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE
Magnesium hydroxide Mg (OH) 2 is a compound used as a food additive for its function as an acidity regulator; in particular, it is a strongly alkalizing additive. It is used in the production of cheese to improve the curd and as a stabilizer of vegetables during canning.
It can be contained in different foods, such as canned cheese and vegetables.
It comes in the form of a white, odorless, coarse powder that is practically insoluble in water and in ethanol.
This compound is also used in the medical field to treat certain diseases (eg Maalox).
At the moment there are no known negative side effects on humans, so this additive is considered harmless (in Australia, however, it is prohibited). At high doses it produces a known laxative effect.
