toxicity and toxicology

How to intervene in case of a viper bite?

When bitten by a viper, it is first of all important to remain calm and try to reach an emergency room for antidote administration as soon as possible.

Even if it is difficult, it is not necessary to start running, which would favor the spreading of poison in the circulation, but limit movement as much as possible. Before the swelling prevents it, it is necessary to remove rings or bracelets. Do not aspirate or incise the wound in order to favor the escape of infected blood.

It is useful to wash with water and disinfect (if possible) the wound; never use alcohol instead, as it reacts with poison and produces toxic substances.

To slow down the speed with which the poison diffuses into the blood, instead, it is useful to immobilize the affected limb with a splint or bandages and apply upstream of the bite a fairly tight tourniquet (or a belt), with the foresight to loosen it at regular intervals so as not to block circulation.
